About the Society

A community of bonsai enthusiasts meeting monthly at Wellington Point. Here's who we are and what happens at a meeting.

Who we are

Beginners to seasoned practitioners.

The society was formed in 2006 to support local bonsai enthusiasts of all levels, and we've been meeting in the Redlands ever since. Some members joined a few months ago. Others have been refining trees for thirty years.

We have a soft spot for Australian natives like banksia, melaleuca, ficus rubiginosa, leptospermum and callistemon. That said, traditional Japanese species and exotics are just as welcome on the bench.

The society is run by a volunteer committee and is a member of the Australian Associated Bonsai Clubs. Anyone with an interest in bonsai is welcome to come along, with or without a tree.

A typical meeting

What to expect on a Saturday.

Doors open at 10:30 am. The morning is a members' workshop, with the Learners' Group running alongside it for newer members, and time at the bench on your own trees.

After lunch, the afternoon is given to a demonstration or presentation, by a senior member or an invited guest. Bring whatever you're working on, your tools, and a willingness to put a tree in front of someone with more experience than you.

Meetings wrap up around 4 pm.

Training & development

Ways to learn at the bench.

Learners' Group

Smaller, less formal sessions for newer members to ask questions, work through specific techniques, and get focused attention.

Demonstrations

Most meetings feature a demonstration, often by a visiting practitioner, working through a tree from start to finish so you can see the reasoning behind each cut.

Time at the bench

Bring your own trees along. There's help on hand from members who have been doing this for decades, which is how most of us learned.

Come along to a meeting.

New visitors are welcome at any monthly meeting, and there's no need to join first. If you're unsure, drop us a line and someone will say hello at the door.
